Boxing Politics: Ryan Garcia Suspended for One Year by NYSAC / Devin Haney Reacts
Ryan Garcia’s Suspension
Ryan Garcia has been suspended until April 2025 for testing positive for a banned substance. This suspension, announced by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC), means Garcia will forfeit his $1.1 million purse from his fight against Devin Haney. According to the New York Department of State, the forfeited amount will be returned to the promoter, not the NYSAC.
Garcia’s suspension will last until April 20, 2025, exactly one year after his bout with Haney. To regain his professional boxer license in New York, Garcia must provide a clean urinalysis. This situation has sent shockwaves through the boxing community, raising questions about fairness, accountability, and the impact of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in sports.
Devin Haney’s Reaction
Devin Haney, in an interview with Dan Rafel, expressed his gratitude towards his supporters and addressed the backlash he faced after the fight. Haney remarked, "Performance-enhancing drugs shouldn't be in any sport, especially boxing. Every time we step in the ring, we put our lives on the line." This statement underscores the gravity of the issue, despite some critics arguing that the dose of Ostarine found in Garcia's system was minimal.
Haney, at 25 years old, has already made a significant mark in boxing, being a two-weight-class world champion and the current WBC super-lightweight world champion. He emphasized the importance of moving forward, "It could've happened to anybody. I'm thankful it happened to me because I'm strong enough to take what happened and move forward."
